Understanding BEA Weblogic Work

Developers.

Several people have said they live in a world all their own. They’ve got my vote.

That’s why I’ve taken to helping people understand the rolls of various type of developer positions including those that have BEA Weblogic (AKA Oracle Weblogic) jobs. A point to remember is that Weblogic can come with a variety of titles even including Aqualogic.

First, for the record, what exactly does a Weblogic 8 or similar type of developer do? Simply put, Weblogic programmers work on projects from the Weblogic platform.

A recent job posting I found included the following requirements within its documentation.

• Weblogic Portal Lead with six to nine years of work in software development
• Framework and features experience within WebLogic Portal 10.3
• Personalization (skins, themes, layouts)
• Page Flows, Annotations
• Security–UUP/Roles/Entitlements

The terms above may not be familiar to you, since this is an overview of Weblogic that is not a huge issue.

Generally speaking Weblogic training includes:

• BS in engineering, computers, MIS or work related experience.
• Experience in web development and development life cycle.
• Develops using the J2EE platform

What is a J2EE platform?

I turned to Webopedia (correct, not Wikipedia) for this answer and found

J2EE is a platform-independent, Java-centric environment from Sun for developing, building and deploying Web-based enterprise applications online.

My conclusion would thus be that those who have learned Java may choose to increase their abilities by becoming versed in the finer points of Weblogic

Understanding the future of the industry of Weblogic is a really good idea before entering into training for this discipline. According to research I uncovered there is indeed a need for Weblogic developers in today’s industry with the following states offering the lion’s share of these types of positions:

  • New York
  • Virginia
  • Connecticut
  • California
  • Texas
  • New Jersey

Weblogic is just one of many options available for people who live in these locations. Consider telecommuting if you have the right talent but are unable to move into one of these areas.

This is not saying that Weblogic jobs are not available elsewhere, they may just be a bit more challenging to find. Or you may need to consider a move, especially if you are able to secure one of the higher paying opportunities that Weblogic jobs offer. A Weblogic opportunity usually starts at around 46K while being able to go as high as 100K for the more experienced positions.

Titles for Weblogic positions usually are similar to the following:

• Weblogic Architects
• Weblogic Admins
• Weblogic Developers

The best opportunities and greatest growth seems to be happening for Weblogic Developers. Weblogic positions are available beyond that of Developers though they may be harder to find and secure.

Books to consider purchasing to find out more about the finer points of Weblogic would include but certainly not be limited to:

• WebLogic Server Bible
• J2EE Web Services on WebLogic
• Oracle WebCenter 11g Handbook
• WebLogic 8.1 Unleashed
• J2EE Performance Testing with WebLogic Server

A simple search on Google or query on Amazon will help you find any of the above books or ones like them.
